“I accepted my condition and was like ‘what can I do within these limitations and within this condition to have meaning in my world?’ And that took the form of writing, I started doing Ikebana, Japanese flower arrangement and then I started really going deep into my roots and into my personal spiritual beliefs. I received a lot of help from a Buddhist priest in the area, who took me under his wing and taught me Japanese rites and rituals. These were things that brought me a lot of peace and gave me strength, and made me feel connected to my family and my ancestors. It was empowering on so many levels.”
